VALERO ALAMO BOWL ANNOUNCES 2007 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS AT FLEMING’S STEAKHOUSE AWARDS LUNCHEON
-- $440,000 in Scholarships Awarded to High School Seniors Over Last Eight Years --
The Valero Alamo Bowl announced its 2007 scholarship winners today at a special luncheon held at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar.
Valero Alamo Bowl Chairman John Yantis presented the $3,000 scholarships to 26 graduating seniors, who were selected from more than 45 Bexar County high schools. To be eligible for consideration, applicants must have ranked in the top 10 percent of their class and have at least an SAT of 1250 or an ACT of 28.
“The Valero Alamo Bowl is honored to recognize the achievements earned by these seniors in front of 65,000 people at this year’s sold out game on December 29,” said Valero Alamo Bowl Chairman John Yantis. “These students should be commended for their superiority inside the classroom and on the field.”
Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, teacher recommendations and involvement in extracurricular activities and honors as well as a personal narrative.
“As some of Bexar County’s finest students these young individuals have proven themselves primed for success in both future academic and professional realms,” said Derrick Fox, President and CEO of the Valero Alamo Bowl. “Their academic and extracurricular accomplishments are a true reflection of the guidance and care bestowed upon them by teachers and parents.”
This year’s recipients are:
Jasmine Bell, John Paul Stevens High School. Jasmine hopes to attend Trinity University and major in Accounting. She currently serves as Senior Class President, has been a member of the National Honor Society for two years and the Water Polo and Swim team for four years.
Jackson Block, Holmes High School. Jackson hopes to attend Stanford University and major in Biology or Physics. He has been a member and President of the Spanish Honor Society for two years and participated in Varsity Football, Tennis, Soccer, Water Polo and Swimming. Jackson received 1st Team All-District honors in Soccer last year.
Matthew Carey, Central Catholic High School. Matthew hopes to attend the Rice University and major in Chemistry. He has been a Methodist Hospital Blue J Volunteer for four years, President of his Academic Team and served on the Student Council. Matthew has also played the piano for twelve years and received superior ratings in the TAPPS State Meet.
Nick Crain, Douglas McArthur High School. Nick hopes to attend the University of Texas at Austin and major in Pre-Medicine. He is a member of the UIL Science Team, National Honor Society and Soccer Team. Nick also enjoys participating in community service activities such as visiting nursing homes and promoting neighborhood recycling efforts.
Matthew Cruz, Harlandale High School. Matthew hopes to attend Texas A&M University and major in Civil Engineering. He is a Class Officer at Harlandale, and participates in St. Leo the Great Youth Choir. Matthew is a Captain for the Varsity Football Team at Harlandale and helped establish a chapter of Fellowship for Christian Athletes where he now serves as a Huddle Leader.
Angel Marie Dominguez, South San Antonio High School. She hopes to attend John Hopkins University and major in Pre-Medicine. Angel is ranked at the top of her 350 person graduating class and has served as President of both the National Honor Society and Band. For the last two years she has also participated in Color Guard and Mariachi.
Gloria Escobar, Thomas Jefferson High School. She hopes to attend the University of Pennsylvania and major in Business. She has contributed to the Newspaper and Yearbook at Thomas Jefferson while also serving as Vice President of the National Honor Society. For the past two summers Gloria has interned with Congressmen Charles A. Gonzalez.
Phillip Fabian, Communications Arts High School. He hopes to attend Cornell University and major in a Medical field. He ranks at the top of his 520 person graduating class and will represent the seniors as the Valedictorian. Phillip has participated in community activities such as Helping Hands and Big Brothers, Big Sisters while also being a member of the Taft Raider Band, National Honor Society and Science Club.
Martell D. Fagan, Sam Houston High School. He hopes to attend Texas State University and major in Physical Education. During the last two years he has been a member of the National Honor Society and PALS. Martell has also participated in the Varsity Football and Basketball teams at Sam Houston.
Kaitlin Fleming, Incarnate Word High School. Kaitlin hopes to attend Creighton University and major in Sports Medicine. She currently ranks at the top of her 132 person class and serves as Senior Class President. Kaitlin is also a Varsity Volleyball Senior Captain and Yearbook Editor.
Vanessa Freckmann, Robert E. Lee High School. She hopes to attend Trinity University and major in International Relations. She currently ranks at the top of her 434 person class and has participated in NESA Instrumental Music Program, GOLD Youth Leadership Seminar and NEISD Unity Leadership Conference. Vanessa was born in Germany and moved to the United States with her family before entering sixth grade.
Nathaniel Gardner, Brackenridge High School. He hopes to attend Texas A&M University and major in Aerospace. He is a member of JROTC, DECA and the Brackenridge Show Choir. Nathaniel’s passion of space and discovery fuel his desire to someday work for NASA.
Scott Weston Harris, Ronald Reagan School. He hopes to attend the University of Texas at Austin and major in Engineering. He is a three-year member of the Underclassman Honor Society, a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and of the Reagan Football team. Scott enjoys playing the piano, model aviation and working toward his dream of being a Mechanical Engineer.
Brittany Horton, East Central High School. She hopes to attend Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi and major in either Biology or Zoology. She has been a member of the school newspaper as Editor-In-Chief, National Honor Society and Student Council. Brittany is pursuing her dreams of being an animal trainer by participating in the Career Camp at SeaWorld for the past two-years.
Leigh Hunsaker (Lee Hŭn´sā ker), Samuel Clemens High School. She hopes to attend the Brigham Young University and major in Humanities. She is a four-year member of the Girls Soccer Team as well a two-year member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. Leigh loves writing and hopes to pursue a career as a University English Professor.
Corey Philipp, Tom C. Clark High School. He hopes to attend Rice University and major in Engineering. He is a four-year member of the Latin Club where he currently serves as President. Corey and his team won the National Championship in the 2006 Latin Competition. He is also a member of the Math Club, National Honor Society and Clark Football Team.
Jamie Pinckard, Sandra Day O’Connor High School. She hopes to attend Rice University and major in Pre-Medicine. She is a three-year member and Captain of the Varsity Track team. Much of Jamie’s activities involve her passion for horseback riding where she has won numerous ribbons and prizes.
Alexis Rodriguez, G.W. Brackenridge High School. She hopes to attend Stanford University and major in Engineering. She will represent the senior class as Valedictorian this spring. Alexis is at the top of her class while also participating in Varsity Golf, Academic Decathlon and Student Government. She currently serves as President of the National Honor Society.
Hannah Sadler, Incarnate Word High School. She hopes to attend Brown University and major in Chemistry. She has been a member of the Latin Club, National Honor Society and volunteered in multiple church and school groups over the last three years. Hannah is a three year Captain of her Varsity Basketball Team.
Andrea K. Shannon, Randolph High School. She hopes to attend Yale University and major in Creative Writing and Pre-Law. She is a four-year member of the Student Council and a two-year member of the National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society and the Thespian Society. Andrea hopes to attend law school and begin a career in Law.
Lukas Sheridan, Robert G. Cole High School. He hopes to attend Southern Methodist University and major in general Pre-Medicine. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council and has been a four-year participant of JROTC and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Lukas is a four-year participant of the Football, Soccer and Tennis teams.
Scott Sean Talamantez, Luther Burbank High School. He hopes to attend M.I.T and major in Civil Engineering. He served as Captain of his Swim Team and two-year member of the National Honor Society. Scott has also received National Hispanic Scholar honors through the International Baccalaureate Program.
David Tenorio, Luther Burbank High School. He hopes to attend Stanford University and major in Political Science. He has participated in Model UN of San Antonio, Student Council and the National Honor Society. David is also the Captain of his Basketball team at Luther Burbank.
Justin Uresti, South San Antonio High School. He hopes to attend New York University and major in International Relations. He is involved in multiple community service activities throughout the year such as Young Life, Elf Louise Christmas Project and Pen Pal. Justin is also Captain of his Basketball and Cross-Country teams.
Marika Vela-Gude, St. Anthony Catholic High School. She hopes to attend New York University and double major in Business Marketing and Spanish. She has played Varsity Soccer, Volleyball, Track and Cross-Country while volunteering and keeping her membership in the National Honor Society. Marika was also honored as Student of the Week for the Express-News.
Fanny Zepeda, Sam Houston High School. She hopes to attend the University of Texas at Austin and major in Biology. She is a member of the National Honor Society, PALS and has served as President and Vice President of Student Council. Fanny also participates in Varsity Track and Cross-Country.
The scholarship winners will also be recognized on-field during the first quarter at this year’s Valero Alamo Bowl at 7:00 p.m. December 29.
The Valero Alamo Bowl Scholarship Program is administered through the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation (a San Antonio scholarship clearinghouse) and funded through the fundraising events of the Valero Alamo Bowl. No more than two nominations are accepted from each Bexar County high school.
Since the program’s inception in 2000, the Alamo Bowl has awarded $440,000 to graduating Bexar County high school students.
