The non-profit Valero Alamo Bowl's purpose is to stage a premier college football game as the showcase of an annual festival of events that that will bring enjoyment to South Texans, San Antonians and visitors alike while creating postive economic impact and national attention for the community each year and substantial benefit for the participating universities.
Now almost 20 years old, the Valero Alamo Bowl boasts an enviable track record of exciting games that deliver economic impact for San Antonio and exposure for both the city and the schools playing in the game.
In 2011, the Valero Alamo Bowl will award a record combined payout of $6.35 million to the Big 12 and Pac-12 universities selected to play in San Antonio. This payout ranks the Valero Alamo #11 of the 35 bowl games up from #18 out of 18 games in its inaugural year.
The Valero Alamo Bowl is also proud to have grown its local community outreach efforts.
For its 20th Anniversary game, the Valero Alamo Bowl Scholarship program will surpass the $1 million mark in total scholarships granted. This season, a minimum of 31 graduating seniors selected from San Antonio high schools will each receive $4,000 college scholarships and be recognized on the field during the game.
In addition, this is the Valero Alamo Bowl's third year of its partnership with the San Antonio Food Bank that began with a “Fill the Bowl” fund-raiser in 2008.
"Fill the Bowl" helped collect 24,329 pounds of food for the San Antonio Food Bank which was enough to provide 19,000 meals for Southwest Texas families.
The partnership has expanded to include Pop Warner Football with an annual food drive. In 2010, over 1,000 pounds of food was donated, which equals more than 750 meals for the thousands of people who rely on the Food Bank's services. This year the food drive will be held on Saturday, September 17 at 10 different Pop Warner Football locations.
The Valero Alamo Bowl also annually supports such organizations as Boy Scouts of America, The First Tee of San Antonio and the Kids Sports Network.
Throughout the year, Valero Alamo Bowl staff members and volunteers donate their time at various non-profits such as the SAMMinistries Transitional Living and Learning Center and Habitat for Humanity.
To provide opportunities for local youth and families in need to see the excitement of college football in person, the Valero Alamo Bowl also solicits bowl partners to underwrite game tickets to local charity organizations such as Baptist Children's Home, Boys and Girls Club, Boysville, Family Service Association, Medina Children’s Home, Methodist Mission Home, Mission Road Ministries, Roy Maas Youth Alternatives, the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center and the
YMCA. To register a non-profit as a perspective beneficiary of charity tickets, please email info@alamobowl.com.
San Antonio’s military community is an important part of the city and its history. As a token of our appreciation for their service to our country, the Valero Alamo Bowl annually hosts members of the Wounded Warriors Project and receives additional underwriting allowing up 2,000 military personnel and their families to attend each game on a reduced basis.
