San Antonio Misses Out On 2017 National Championship

The College Football Playoff Group announced today Arizona will host the College Football Championship Game in 2016 and Tampa Bay will host in 2017. San Antonio was a finalist for the 2017 game.

“I want to congratulate Arizona and Tampa Bay on their successful bids and thank the College Football Playoff Group for their consideration,” said Derrick Fox, President/CEO of the Valero Alamo Bowl. “The momentum in San Antonio is unprecedented and I’m proud of the way we united to deliver an aggressive bid that highlighted our city’s compact and walkable downtown coupled with Alamodome, Convention Center, River Walk and other improvements. San Antonio is only going to get better and future opportunities are coming.”

"San Antonio, as an NCAA Championship City, has demonstrated that there are few locations any better at crowning major champions” said San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro. “Time and again, San Antonio has proven that it does more than simply host sports' biggest events. It makes them unforgettable. We are committed to becoming a world class city and will continue look for ways to improve the experience for our visitors and residents.”

"We're disappointed that San Antonio wasn't awarded the 2017 College Football Championship Game, but are gratified that the city was part of a historic selection process,” Michael Sawaya, Director of Convention and Sports Facilities for the City of San Antonio. “The vision our city has will help grow its longstanding reputation as one of the fans’ favorite cities to host major sporting events in the future.”

“San Antonio was honored to be a major player in the extraordinary selection process for the 2017 College Football Championship Game,” said Casandra Matej, Executive Director of the San Antonio Convention & Visitors Bureau. “While disappointed that the city was not selected for this historic showcase, San Antonio looks forward to future events where we can make sports’ biggest moments even more unforgettable.”
