Game Recap

The inaugural Builders Square Alamo Bowl pitted Iowa from the Big Ten Conference against California of the Pac-10 Conference on December 31, 1993. Electricity filled the air as 45,716 fans gathered to kick off the New Year with a San Antonio-style football fiesta.

Unfortunately for Iowa head coach Hayden Fry and his Hawkeyes, the excitement at kickoff did not translate to the scoreboard as Cal won easily, 37-3. The Golden Bears took advantage of the Hawkeyes’ sputtering offense as they reached the red zone on its first three drives. Cal kicker Doug Brien connected on field goals of 37, 20 and 30 yards to take a 9-0 lead.

California quarterback Dave Barr kept the pressure on the Hawkeye defense with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Mike Caldwell.

Any chances of an Iowa comeback were dashed on the last play of the second quarter when Cal defensive end and future NFL standout Regan Upshaw smashed into Hawkeye quarterback Paul Burmeister as he released the ball. Jerrott Willard picked off the errant pass and ran 61 yards for a touchdown to give the Golden Bears a 23-0 lead. Iowa produced its only points of the night in the third quarter on a 42-yard field goal by Brian Hurley.

Cal ran up 445 yards of total offense compared to Iowa’s 90. Barr, the game’s Offensive MVP, completed 21 of 28 passes for 266 yards and 3 touchdowns.
