Game Recap
No. 21 Iowa shuts out Texas Tech in Alamo City return
After losing the inaugural Alamo Bowl in 1993, the No. 21 Iowa Hawkeyes headed into San Antonio bent on redemption. Four quarters and 27 points later, Iowa emerged with a shutout victory against Texas Tech in the fourth annual Builders Square Alamo Bowl.
Tech’s prolific run offense never got off the ground as Doak Walker Award winner Byron Hanspard was held to 64 yards rushing after averaging more than 200 yards a game during the regular season, while Tech quarterback Zebbie Lethridge was sacked a bowl-record five times.
After a Lethridge interception early in the first quarter, Iowa’s Matt Sherman punched into the end zone on a one-yard run. The Red Raiders never recovered as running back Sedrick Shaw, who was selected as the Offensive MVP, ran for 113 yards.
Late in the game, Iowa quarterback Matt Sherman sealed Tech’s fate with a 99-yard drive culminating in Rodney Filer’s 14-yard scoring dash.
The Hawkeyes dedicated their victory to the family of linebacker Mark Mitchell. On the Friday before the game, Mitchell received word that his family, en route to San Antonio to see his last collegiate game, was part of an auto accident that resulted in his mother’s death and severe injuries to his father and two brothers. To honor them, Iowa wore blank black helmets previously bearing the traditional gold “Tigerhawk” logo and stripe.
