The Valero Alamo Bowl and PNC Bank are once again celebrating the power of education through the College Football Playoff Foundation’s Extra Yard for Teachers program. What started in 2021 with a few surprise grants for five deserving teachers has now expanded to recognize 30 remarkable San Antonio-area educators who make a lasting impact in their classrooms and communities.
Each teacher earns a $500 grant for classroom resources, tickets to attend the 2025 Valero Alamo Bowl, and special recognition at the game. The excitement in each classroom during the surprise visits reflected how meaningful this program is for educators and students alike.
Now in its fifth year, this collaboration between the Valero Alamo Bowl, PNC Bank, and the College Football Playoff Foundation continues to grow thanks to generous community partners including Accenture Federal Services, Ryan Velasquez, and Valero. Together, these organizations are helping provide local teachers with the tools and encouragement they need to create engaging learning experiences and inspire the next generation of leaders.
The Extra Yard for Teachers program is part of a national initiative by the College Football Playoff Foundation, the largest sports entity in America dedicated to supporting educators. Since its inception, the CFP Foundation has invested more than 92 million dollars in education-focused initiatives, impacting nearly 650,000 teachers and 13 million students nationwide. Its work focuses on four key areas: recognition, resources, professional development, and recruitment and retention, all aimed at elevating the teaching profession and improving student outcomes.
As the Valero Alamo Bowl continues to grow, so does its community outreach. Each year, this program allows us to celebrate and give back to the teachers who make a lasting difference in our community. How our Grants Impact Classrooms
Extra Yard for Teachers grants help local classrooms come alive with resources that inspire learning, creativity, and confidence. These grants give teachers the tools they need to create engaging, inclusive, and hands-on learning experiences that directly support their students’ academic, social-emotional, and sensory growth.
In literacy, students explore stories, practice reading skills, and build comprehension with new leveled books, graphic novels, audiobooks, and Tonies boxes. These resources help children of all backgrounds, including bilingual learners, develop confidence as readers and discover the joy of storytelling. Flexible seating options such as floor rockers, pod swings, and sensory chairs allow students to move, focus, and engage in ways that meet their individual learning styles.
For math and literacy, hands-on manipulatives and interactive materials provide students with tangible ways to explore concepts, strengthen skills, and build problem-solving confidence. Everyday classroom supplies, from markers to poster-size paper, allow students to participate actively and creatively in lessons.
Grants also support life skills and physical education. Students in special education programs practice real-world skills through class businesses and community outings, while PE classes benefit from new sports equipment that encourages teamwork, fitness, and healthy habits.
With Extra Yard for Teachers grants, classrooms become places where every student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. These grants empower teachers to elevate learning, foster curiosity, and build lasting confidence, helping students reach their fullest potential while making every classroom a place where kids are excited to learn.

Andrew Smierciak – LOTC, Poe Middle School, SAISD
Andrew Smierciak, an LOTC teacher at Poe Middle School, inspires students with his passion for exploration, creativity, and hands-on learning. He sees his students as curious, energetic learners eager to try new things, ask questions, and share innovative ideas. Andrew fosters a classroom environment where every student can challenge themselves, support one another, and discover their own strengths. Amelia Ferrell – Oak Meadow Elementary, North East ISD
Amelia Ferrell, a Deaf and Hard of Hearing teacher for 4th and 5th grade students at Oak Meadow Elementary, embodies leadership, service, and inspiration every day. She advocates fiercely for her students and serves as a powerful role model, showing the strength of perseverance and positivity. Beyond her classroom, Amelia leads the after-school American Sign Language Club, helping students across campus learn ASL and build empathy, inclusion, and understanding. Her joyful spirit, calm presence, and willingness to support others make her a cornerstone of the Oak Meadow community. As someone who is Deaf and Hard of Hearing herself, Amelia’s resilience and dedication inspire everyone around her.
Ashley Nieves – Dobie Junior High, SCUC ISD
Ashley Nieves, an ALE teacher at Dobie Junior High, creates a welcoming and inclusive environment where every student feels supported and valued. She leads the Student Wellness Club, connecting students, families, and community partners to promote well-being and belonging, and volunteers with cheer and student council events to boost school spirit. Ashley also coordinates fundraisers that engage local businesses and families to support student needs. In the classroom, she provides engaging, cross-curricular lessons that integrate science with literacy, art, and real-world problem solving. Cassie Perkins – Pieper Ranch Middle School, Comal ISD
Cassie Perkins, a 7th grade social studies teacher at Pieper Ranch Middle School, has been named Teacher of the Year in her district, a well-deserved recognition of her dedication, passion, and impact on students. She is known for her innovative teaching methods, unwavering support, and commitment to creating a positive and engaging learning environment. Cassie inspires curiosity, fosters a love of learning, and connects with every student, helping them reach their full potential. Christopher Raimondi – Randolph High School, Randolph ISD
Christopher Raimondi, a math teacher at Randolph High School, has quickly become a valued member of the Randolph Secondary community. Christin Herrada – Krueger Middle School, North East ISD

Even while courageously facing personal health challenges, she brings positivity, energy, and unwavering commitment to her students, creating a classroom where learners feel supported, challenged, and inspired. Connor Settlemire – John Jay Science & Engineering Academy, Northside ISD
Connor Settlemire, a general education English teacher at John Jay Science & Engineering Academy, exemplifies innovation, leadership, and dedication to students. With more than a decade of teaching experience across Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Antonio, Connor brings creativity, rigor, and empathy into every classroom. He has transformed how students engage with literature, using multimedia, discussion, and structured writing to make poetry and novels accessible while instilling confidence and critical thinking. Beyond instruction, Connor has developed initiatives like “Grammar Across Campus” to make learning engaging and collaborative, and he invests deeply in relationships with students and families, creating a foundation of trust and encouragement. Giovanni Neri – STEM Academy @ LEE High School, North East ISD
Giovanni Neri, an engineering and robotics teacher at STEM Academy @ LEE High School, consistently goes the extra mile for his students, inspiring curiosity and a love of learning in every lesson. He connects classroom concepts to real-world engineering applications and dedicates hundreds of hours each year mentoring students outside of class. As the FRC Robotics sponsor, Mr. Neri champions each student, fostering teamwork, innovation, and perseverance. Isreal Ortiz – Loma Park Elementary, Edgewood ISD
Isreal Ortiz, a PE teacher and coach at Loma Park Elementary, has dedicated 30 years to Edgewood ISD, including 27 years at Loma Park, inspiring students with his energy, expertise, and passion for learning. He not only teaches physical education but also coaches basketball and volleyball at Gus Garcia, engaging students in meaningful, fun, and purposeful experiences. Known for setting high expectations and helping students achieve their goals, Coach Ortiz plans thoughtfully and leads with heart, making him a beloved mentor and the heartbeat of his school community.
Jaeleen Fullen – Howard Early Childhood Center, Alamo Heights ISD
Jaeleen Fullen, the 2025 Howard Teacher of the Year, is a PE coach at Howard Early Childhood Center, teaching 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds with energy, care, and purpose. Since joining Alamo Heights ISD in 2023, she has fostered a safe and supportive environment where students develop confidence, teamwork, and lifelong healthy habits through play-based learning. Drawing on her experience as a high school softball coach, Jaeleen teaches the values of sportsmanship, perseverance, and gracious winning and losing, helping students build important social and emotional skills while having fun. Jennifer Campbell – Randolph Middle School, Randolph Field ISD

Jennifer Cervantes – Lanier High School, SAISD
