Bowl High School Scholarship Opens

This year the Valero Alamo Bowl will award a record 88 high school student-athletes a $7,500 scholarship to attend the college of their choice surpassing last year’s 84 recipients representing 71 different high schools.

The $660,000 total will allow the Bowl to again select at least one winner from every participating San Antonio area high school.

Seniors from San Antonio area public schools (25 miles from the city center) and long-established private schools can obtain the Bexar County Scholarship Clearing House application from their school’s College and Career coordinator.

2021 Key Dates:

September 8: Schools picked up their allotment of applications and Booklets of San Antonio / Bexar County Scholarship Opportunities for High School Seniors from the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation who administers the program for the Valero Alamo Bowl.

November 1:
 Deadline for schools to submit their allotted student applications to the Foundation (each school’s internal deadlines and process for selecting their group of applicants varies so check with your school’s Counseling Office).

December 3: Winners will be notified and invited to two functions.

December 15: Winners to be recognized at the H-E-B Scholarship Luncheon.

December 29: Winners will attend the game courtesy of Frost Bank and be recognized on the field during the first quarter of the Valero Alamo Bowl.

The Valero Alamo Bowl Student-Athlete Scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement, evaluation of personal narrative, teacher recommendations, involvement in extra-curricular activities and awards/honors received. It is mandatory that applicants have earned at least one varsity letter in athletics. The Selection Committee also gives preference to students based on the number of years they have participated in varsity athletics and team leadership roles or awards received.

The Valero Alamo Bowl college scholarship program is called the the Valero Alamo Bowl Community Partners Scholarship and is funded by the Bowl and matching programs at all six of San Antonio’s four-year universities.

On September 8, 2021, 72 winners from University of the Incarnate Word, Our Lady of the Lake University, St. Mary’s University, Texas A&M–San Antonio, Trinity University and UTSA sharing $440,000 in awards were recognized at the Rudy’s Bar-B-Q Pigskin Preview Luncheon. While each San Antonio university determines its own criteria for selecting the winners, the program’s focus is junior and seniors with a high propensity to stay and work in San Antonio.

In total the Valero Alamo Bowl will award over $1 million for the 2021-22 season which is the highest local giving total among all 42 bowl games.

Valero Alamo Bowl scholarship programs are funded through Bowl partners and ticket buyers as well as direct contributions from Valero, Frost Bank, H-E-B, and the six San Antonio four-year universities.
