Texas Tech Selected for 2001 SYLVANIA Alamo Bowl

Texas Tech has been selected as the Big 12 representative to play in the 2001 SYLVANIA Alamo Bowl on Saturday, December 29 at 2:30 p.m. (CST) in San Antonio’s 65,000-seat Alamodome.

In the game, which will be televised nationally on ESPN, Texas Tech (7-4) will face the Iowa Hawkeyes (6-5). This will be only the second meeting between the two universities and the first since 1996 when Iowa beat Tech 27-0 in the 1996 Builders Square Alamo Bowl.

“We are extremely excited to invite Texas Tech and their high-powered offense to San Antonio for the SYLVANIA Alamo Bowl,” said Norman T. Dugas, Jr., Chairman of the SYLVANIA Alamo Bowl. “An Iowa-Texas Tech match-up will give us two of college football’s most exciting offenses battling it out in the Alamodome.”

Iowa has the number one pass offense in the Big Ten and Texas Tech has the number one pass offense in the Big 12. The Red Raiders are led by junior quarterback Kliff Kingsbury (a New Braunfels native and New Braunfels High graduate). Kingsbury has thrown for 3,502 yards and 25 touchdowns with a 69 percent completion percentage for the season.
