Record Number of Students Win Bowl Scholarships

The Valero Alamo Bowl started a scholarship program in 2000 with 25 San Antonio high school students splitting $50,000 in scholarships.

For the 2021-2022 school year, the Valero Alamo Bowl will award over $1 million to 160 San Antonio high school and college students. This amount is projected to be the largest scholarship total in Valero Alamo Bowl history and tops among all 39 bowl games.

The first $660,000 will be split between a record 88 winners of Valero Alamo Bowl Student-Athlete Scholarship winners who were recognized at the H-E-B Scholarship Awards Luncheon on December 15.

The students included at least one winner from every San Antonio area public school and well-established private school. The scholarships were awarded on the basis of academic achievement, teacher recommendations, involvement in extracurricular activities, and varsity sports as well as honors received and a personal narrative.

In addition to the luncheon, the winners will be recognized on-field during the Valero Alamo Bowl courtesy of game tickets provided by Frost.

This year’s 88 Valero Alamo Bowl Student-Athlete Scholarship recipients listed by school are:

Timothy Huff, Advanced Learning Academy – Timothy is a varsity cross country runner and participates in theatre. He intends to attend the University of Chicago to eventually become an urban planner.

Hannah Simpson, Alamo Heights High School – Hannah is a four-year soccer letterman, two-year captain, and 2021 District MVP. She plans to attend St. Edwards University then hopes to go to medical school.

Cody Clute, Atonement Academy – Cody plays tennis and soccer at the Atonement Academy. He plans to study geology at Texas A&M University.

Samuel Theiss, Boerne High School – Samuel is a soccer four-year letterman, two year captain and state champion. He hopes to attend UNC.

Clarissa Cortez, Brackenridge High School – Clarissa is a three-sport varsity letterman at Brackenridge High School. She plans on studying pre physical therapy at the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor.

Arthur Terrance, Brackenridge High School – Arthur is the tennis team captain at his school. He plans to study political science at Yale University and eventually attend law school.

Joyce Lai, Brandeis High School – Joyce is a varsity swimmer at Brandies High School. She plans to attend MIT to study computer science.

Sukhraj Walia, Brennan High School – Sukhraj plays basketball and is a swimmer. He plans to attend Trinity University to earn a biology degree.

Xavier Noel Alva, Burbank High School – Xavier is a varsity member of the baseball team at Burbank High School. He plans to become a high school teacher after completing his undergraduate degree.

Amberlin Casiano, Burbank High School – Amberlin is a four-year letterwinner in track & field and cross country. She plans to attend Rice University to get her BSN.

Diego A. Zambrano, Central Catholic High School – Diego plays soccer and participates in JROTC at Central Catholic High School. He plans to attend Texas A&M and hopes to go to veterinarian school.

Wyatt Anthony, Churchill High School – Wyatt is captain of the soccer team and hopes to study neuroscience at the University of Texas.

Jacob Coolbaugh, Churchill High School – Jacob is a three-year letterman in both football and baseball. He is in the National Honor Society and intends to attend the University of Arkansas to study economics.

Alec Perez, Clark High School – Alec is the Clark High School basketball team captain. He intends to study sport management at the University of Texas at Austin. 

Zaryah Wray, Clemens High School – Zaryah is a four-year volleyball player at Clemens High School and is a member of the National Honor Society. She intends to start her college education at the University of Texas at Austin and eventually attend medical school.

Amari Chester, Cole High School – Amari is a varsity basketball player at Cole High School. He hopes to study at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Jessica Salan, Cole High School – Jessica is a swimming and rifle team varsity letterman. She plans to attend Texas A&M University.

Aeneas Garcia, Communications Arts High School – Aeneas is a on the varsity swim and water polo team. He hopes to be a pre-med student at Texas A&M University.

Ebony Joseph, Communications Arts High School – Ebony is a varsity soccer player and plans to attend the United States Air Force Academy.

Daniel Helbig, Construction Careers Academy – Daniel plays tennis at the Construction Careers Academy and intends to study at MIT.

Kalista Sienna Esquivel Serna, Cornerstone Christian School – Kalista is captain of her school’s varsity soccer team. She intends to be a pre-med student at Southwestern University.

Cristian Gamboa, East Central High School – Christian is a four-year soccer player and plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin.

Tristan Munoz, Edison High School – Tristian is a 2021 District Champion in track and field.  She intends to major in Kinesiology at Texas Tech University.

Deandra Rodriguez, Edison High School – Deandra plays softball and volleyball at Edison High School. She plans to attend Dartmouth College.

Andrew Delgado, Fox Tech High School – Andrew runs cross country at Fox Tech High School and plans to attend the University of Miami.

Marissa Nicole Valadez, Fox Tech High School – Marissa is class officer and captain of her school’s basketball team. She plans to attend the University of the Incarnate Word for nursing.

Amy Osborn, Great Hearts Monte Vista – Amy is the varsity volleyball captain at her high school. Amy intends to study at Abilene Christian University.

India Warren, Great Hearts Northern Oaks – India is her school’s cross country and track team captain. India plans to attend the University of Alabama.

Micayla Bustillos, Harlan High School – Micayla is the varsity captain of the Harlan softball team and is the vice president for her school’s National Honor Society. She plans to receive her bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Notre Dame.

Christopher Huelitl-Romero, Harlandale High School – Christopher runs varsity cross country and track at Harlandale High School and is a mentor in their velocity mentoring program. He hopes to study computer science at Rice University.

Thomas Howell, Harlandale High School – Thomas is a varsity football player, a member of the National Honor Society and is a class officer at Harlandale High School. Thomas hopes to attend the University of Texas at Austin.

Michelle Voges, Harlandale STEM Early College High School – Michelle runs cross country and track & field. Michelle intends to study mechanical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. 

Sean Macias, Health Careers High School – Sean is the tennis team captain and plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin then eventually go to medical school.

Jacob Gutierrez, Highlands High School – Jacob is a three-sport letterman at Highlands high School. He hopes to study at the University of Texas at Austin.

Jayce Sibley, Holmes High School – Jayce is a four-year varsity basketball letterman at Holmes High School. He plans to study criminal justice at Stanford University.

Marissa Rodriguez, Holy Cross of San Antonio – Marissa is captain for both her softball and cheer teams. She plans to attend Notre Dame to study psychology.

Hannah Cullum, Incarnate Word High School – Hannah is captain for her cross country, track, and soccer teams. She hopes to be a pre physical therapy student at the Catholic University of America.

Timothy Berlanga, International School of the Americas – Timothy is a varsity basketball letterman and hopes to attend St. Mary’s University.

Ford Leal, Jefferson High School – Ford runs cross country and track for Jefferson’s varsity teams. He hopes to attend the University of Texas at Austin to earn a degree in engineering.

Joseph Gonzalez, Jefferson High School – Joseph is a four-year football letterman at Jefferson High School. He plans on attending the University of Michigan.

Tyler Flores, John Jay High School – Tyler runs track and plays basketball at John Jay High School. Tyler intends to study computer science at UTSA.

Jacob Estrada, John Jay Science and Engineering – Jacob is a four-year letterman in the school’s band and hopes to attend MIT.

Ashley Brown, Johnson High School – Ashley is an All-District Academic Honoree in both basketball and volleyball. Ashley hopes to study biology at Stanford University.

Sierra McDermed, Johnson High School – Sierra is a National Honor Society officer, class officer, and basketball team captain at Johnson High School. Sierra plans to attend Vassar College.

Ja’Nay Gaines, Judson High School – Janay is varsity basketball player who plans to attend Prairie View A&M University.

Tessa Uviedo, Keystone School – Tessa plays basketball and participates in her school’s robotics club. Tessa hopes to attend Wellesley College.

Aurianna Murphy, L.E.E. High School – Aurianna plays volleyball and is in the National Honor Society at L.E.E. High School. Aurianna will be seeking a biology degree from Texas A&M University.

Jessica Garza, Lanier High School – Jessica is the varsity captain for her school’s volleyball team. She hopes to major in interior design at the University of Texas at Austin.

Abner Villanueva, Lanier High School – Abner participates in cross country, track, and basketball at Lanier High School. Abner intends to study zoology at Texas A&M University.

Maya Sanders, Lutheran High School – Maya is her school’s volleyball team captain and also plays basketball softball and track. She is president of student council and plans to attend Texas A&M to study business management.

Marley Walker, Lytle High School – Marley plays on her school’s varsity volleyball team and is the treasurer for the Lytle chapter of the National Honor Society. She intends to major in biology or chemistry and then go to medical school.

Jaden Weatherly, MacArthur High School – Jaden is a four-year varsity basketball letterman. Jaden plans to study mechanical engineering at Texas A&M University.

Rylee Davis, Madison High School – Rylee plays volleyball and is a member of the National Honor Society. She hopes to attend Bethune-Cookman University then work in the medical field.

Crystal Ledesma, Madison High School – Crystal is a 2-year letterman in basketball. She will be attending Texas A&M.

Alisia Schneider, Marshall High School – Alisia plays volleyball at Marshall High School. She will be attending Abilene Christian University.

Gary Escobar, McCollum High School – Gerardo is a three-time letterman in football and track. Gerado plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin. 

Kassidee Webb, Medina Valley High School – Kassidee plays both the volleyball and tennis varsity teams. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and is the president of her school’s science Olympiad.

Avigail Sifuentes, Memorial High School – Avigail is the Memorial High School Girls’ basketball team captain. She hopes to study psychology at the University of North Texas.

Larissa Michelle Elliott, NSITE High School – Larissa is a varsity basketball player who plans to attend Baylor University.

Isabella Ireland, O’Connor High School – Isabella is the soccer captain at O’Connor High School. She hopes to attend Cornell University.

Ryan Summerhays, O’Connor High School – Ryan is a varsity football player and plans to attend BYU and major in pre-dentistry.

Erika Jarzombek, Providence Catholic High School – Erika participates on her school’s dance team. She plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin. 

Paudrianna Nuñez, Randolph High School – Paudrianna is a two-time track and field state qualifier. She hopes to be a pre-law student at Pepperdine University.

Kevin Cai, Reagan High School – Kevin is a four-year varsity swimmer and two-year captain. He is his school’s valedictorian and hopes to attend MIT to study computer science.

Giselle Kaderabek, Reagan High School – Giselle plays volleyball at Regan High School. She intends to study at the University of Pennsylvania.

Cambry Stratton, Roosevelt High School – Cambry is the Roosevelt High School volleyball team captain. She plans to attend Texas A&M to study civil engineering.

Nicholas Campos, Saint Mary’s Hall – Nicholas participates in both the lacrosse and bowling teams. He plans to study international relations at the University of Chicago.

Penelope Luna, Saint Mary’s Hall – Penelope is the captain of her high school and club volleyball teams. She hopes to study at Colombia University. 

Tytiana Williams, Sam Houston High School – Tytiana is an officer on her school’s dance team. She is a three-year member of the National Honor Society and hopes to attend Trinity University to study psychology.

Taylor Allison, San Antonio Christian High School – Taylor plays softball at San Antonio Christian High School. Taylor plans to study government at Liberty University.

Zoe Weems, Smithson Valley High School – Zoe is a varsity basketball player and hopes to attend the University of Texas at Austin in the fall.

Nicholas Hinojosa, Somerset High School – Nicholas is captain of the football, soccer, and UIL Science teams at Somerset High School. He plans to attend Rice University.

Jasmine Watkins, Southside High School – Jasmine participates in basketball and track & field at Southside High School. Jasmine intends to study criminal justice at Texas A&M University.

Sarahi Fernandez, Southwest High School – Sarahi is a three-year captain of her soccer team and plans to attend St. Mary’s University.

Adriana Oviedo, Southwest Legacy High School – Adriana plays soccer and volleyball at Southwest Legacy High School. She plans to study animal science at Texas A&M University.

Marcela Gonzalez, St. Anthony Catholic High School – Marcela is the soccer team captain at her school and plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin.

Maria Christina Orencia, Stacey High School – Maria has earned letters in both basketball and tennis, and plans to study to be a medical lab technician at the University of Texas at Austin.

Cassidy Kratwell, Steele High School – Cassidy runs track for her school and plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin to study mathematics.

Hope Heedley, Stevens High School – Hope runs track at Stevens High School and plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin. 

Madison Ramon, Taft High School – Madison is co-caption for Taft’s cheer team. She plans to study communications at Texas State University.

Anaya Zachery, TMI Episcopal – Anaya is a four-year letterman in cross country at TMI. She plans to attend Yale University.

Mariah Shanklin, Veterans Memorial High School – Mariah is an honorable mention, all-academic team member for the Veterans Memorial Girls basketball team. She intends to study at the University of Texas at Austin and then dental school. 

Annika Jones, Veterans Memorial High School – Annika is the Veterans Memorial High School volleyball team captain who also received All-District honors. She plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin before continuing to medical school. 

Garrett Walters, Wagner High School – Garret is the Wagner High School swim team captain. He plans to attend UT Austin to study architecture.

Emily Casillas, Warren High School – Emily is a two-year captain of the varsity soccer team. She hopes to study computer science at Texas A&M University.

Caleb Alonso-Kidd, Winston High School – Caleb plays football and baseball at Winston High School. Upon Graduation, Caleb hopes to study computer science at the University of Texas at Austin.

Edgar Rodriguez, Young Men’s Leadership Academy – Edgar runs track for the Young Men’s Leadership Academy. He plans to attend UT Austin to study Civil Engineering.

CeAna Vasquez, Young Women’s Leadership Academy – CeAna is a varsity basketball player and is her school’s National Honor Society vice president. She plans on studying psychology at the University of Chicago.

Amberlin Casiano from Burbank High School is this year’s John R. “Jack” Rogers Memorial Winner. This scholarship is given in honor of 2004 Valero Alamo Bowl Chairman, Jack Rogers. Jack, who passed away in May 2020, was a tremendous ambassador for the Bowl and served on the board for over 20 years.

Christopher Huelitl-Romero from Harlandale High School is this year’s Bob Brincat Scholarship Award Winner. This scholarship is annually given in honor of 2008 Valero Alamo Bowl Chairman, Bob Brincat, a tireless advocate for the Bowl’s scholarship program who passed away after a courageous fight against lymphoma.

In addition to the Valero Alamo Bowl Student-Athlete Scholarship awards, the Bowl funds a Valero Alamo Bowl Community Partners scholarship with support from all six of San Antonio’s four-year universities.

In its fourth year, the scholarship total and number of winners will be announced at the start of next college football season. Last year’s program had 72 winners from University of the Incarnate Word, Our Lady of the Lake University, St. Mary’s University, Texas A&M–San Antonio, Trinity University and UTSA sharing $440,000.
