CFP and Bowl Go the Extra Yard For Teachers

The Valero Alamo Bowl partnered with the College Football Playoff Foundation to celebrate the Big Day, a national event that awarded over $4 million in grants and resources to support, celebrate, and thank teachers who are dedicated to helping our kids learn.

Held on September 14, it was the largest single-day effort of community impact ever undertaken by the college football community as 150 schools and organizations participated in the Big Day nationally.

As a part of the CFP Foundation’s Extra Yard for Teachers Initiative, Valero Alamo Bowl fans nominated teachers who were going that extra yard in their classrooms. The nominations poured in with stories of some truly amazing people doing some truly amazing things for future generations.

Thanks to our friends at the CFP Foundation and CFP Extra Yard, we were able to give over $1,000 in Donors Choose gift cards to deserving teachers.

To get the week started, we helped the teacher who got the most attention from her friends and family on social media, Yvonne Cervera of Davis Middle School in the San Antonio Independent School District.

We fulfilled her request to buy history books from distinct voices for her 7th and 8th grade students. Ms. Cervera said, “Our teachers would love to show these students how minorities have affected the history of our country to connect them a bit more with their roots. It’s important for students to learn about topics and people they can relate to and they care about.”

In addition to Ms. Cervera we also helped four more teachers with projects of their own:

Jennifer Witter (Steelton Highspire Elementary School) is a music teacher and will use part of the gift card to help buy storage for her class ukuleles and then help other classrooms in her district.

Josh Ingram (St. Philips Early College High School) will be helping students just a couple of miles from our home at the Alamodome.

Jacob Tingle (Trinity University) is supporting “Diversity Books for #Diverse Students” for Mrs. Castro’s students at Kinder Ranch Elem and “Hands-on!” for Mrs. Nolan’s 4th graders at William Paschall Elementary School.

Kayla Desmond (Bronx Latin) is using her gift card to buy safety supplies to get her classroom ready for blended learning starting up next month.

We are also excited to announce that our partnership with the CFP Foundation isn’t over just yet!

Every Tuesday until the end of the football season, the Valero Alamo Bowl will be participating in CFP Extra Yard’s Tag a Teacher program with the intention of helping our local San Antonio teachers.
