Get to know our 2018 media and sports information intern Josh in this Q&A.
Q: Where are you from?
A: I was born in Dallas, but was raised in Norman, OK, home to the National Weather Center, the Sooners and some slightly above average Tex-Mex.
Q: Who is your alma mater? What’s your degree in?
A: Despite my Norman roots, I graduated from Oklahoma State University with a degree in sports media communications. I was lucky enough to have tons of great professors who taught me as much as they could during my time in Stillwater. Because of my OSU ties, I was fortunate enough to volunteer at different Big 12 Conference events and interned with the Oklahoma City Thunder while in school.
Q: What will you be responsible for while working at the Valero Alamo Bowl?
A: I’m this year’s sports information/media relations intern. That means that I’ll help coordinate our media efforts, culminating in our interactions with the media during Bowl Week. I’ll also create content for events and our social media pages (follow us at @valeroalamobowl), including our media guide and fan guide.
Q: What part of the experience are you most excited about?
A: I’m most excited for actual bowl week, although I know it’ll be a busy time. I’m excited to learn from some of the best in the business and meet all of the great people of San Antonio. And don’t even get me started on the incredible food here – I’m also excited for that.
Q: Where would you like to be in five years?
A: Working as an Associate Athletic Director of Communications at a great university somewhere with good food. Sports and telling stories are two of my passions, so the opportunity to combine the two is something I can’t wait for!
Q: What advice do you have for prospective students who may want to pursue a career sports information?
A: Listen to your mentors – they know how to help you. Make as many connections as you can while you’re in school and work as hard as you can to create a great portfolio. Volunteer at events (like the Valero Alamo Bowl) and build connections that can help you down the line. Never say no to an opportunity.
Q: Favorite thing so far about San Antonio?
A: Other than the food? The people. I know that everyone always claims that their city has the nicest folks, but San Antonio really does. Everyone is friendly and willing to help their fellow San Antonian out.
