Launched in 2000 with 26 students splitting $52,000, the Valero Alamo Bowl scholarship program’s growth over the past 18 years has mirrored the bowl game that it’s associated with. This year, the program, which is the largest bowl scholarship program in the country, will award $1 million to over 130 students in the San Antonio area.
The program rewards some of San Antonio’s brightest students starting with high school seniors and continuing through the collegiate ranks. In August, at the annual Rudy’s Bar-B-Q Pigskin Preview, the Valero Alamo Bowl recognized 63 students from all of San Antonio’s four-year universities. At the Valero Alamo Bowl on Friday, December 28, the high school recipients will be honored on the field of the Alamodome.
The investment back into the city of San Antonio and its future is important to the Valero Alamo Bowl.
“Congratulations to this year’s winners and thank you to the universities who again helped us to fund this program,” said 2018 Valero Alamo Bowl Chair Michael Kiolbassa. “In addition to this year’s projected total economic impact of $40 million to our city, the Valero Alamo Bowl is very proud that our scholarship programs will award $1 million to deserving students at every San Antonio high school and four-year university.”
